Secrets of High Lonesome Singing - The Hillbilly Edition

E-mail Print PDF
There are no translations available.

Now first of all, let me warn you:this is no short article, but approximately 40 pages long booklet on bluegrass singing.

Due to my impractical nature, I was unable to publish this booklet for many years, and the only public issue is now made through these pages. But if you are interested in what actually is hidden under the mantra of "High Lonesome singing", let me share my thoughts and discoveries with you. Hope you will find some time to enjoy it.

1997

Foreword

This booklet was conceived out of desperation. There was so pitifully little written on the topic of singing bluegrass that I had to try to add my corn to the millstone.

The gnawing thought about what really was the high lonesome voice (suspecting that so many people don’t have a clue, while realising that I just broke through the wall with my stubborn head and found some answers) yielded more thoughts and more answers, until  I felt compelled to give a first bluegrass singing workshop. The first thought was conceived already while in Bohemia in 1998, but my speedy retreat from my band Sunny Side cut this short.

The reason for publishing it on my page was the possibility to display the symmetrical translation both in English and Czech languages.

As a direct result of the success of IBMA's International Summit at World of Bluegrass 2008, a group of those who had attended decided to organize a similar event in Europe, with the following objectives:

The blog about our jam "U Supa"

If anyone would tell me one month ago that this jam will be mentioned in a report of a BBC reporter Rosie Johnston and on the top of it "someone" would add our jam even on an internet blog (normally devoted to Prague's restaurants and gourmet food), I would have thought he was pulling my leg. But the opposite has actually happened and here is the link:

Nashville honored the Slovak native inventors of the Dobro - the Dopyera Brothers

E-mail Print PDF

(This Article is already about two year old, but I believe its message is still very valid.) During IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) World of Bluegrass Business Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, the inventors of the Dobro, the Dopyera Brothers, were honored with Distinguished Achievement Award.

IBMA’s Distinguished Achievement Award is one of the association’s highest honors and recognitions for those in bluegrass music who have proven to be forerunners in their particular field of endeavor, or those who have fostered bluegrass music image with developments that broaden this music’s recognition and accessibility. img_7334.jpg

Bluegrass Thrives, Far From Home

By RUTH ELLEN GRUBER
Published in The New York Times on April 9, 2009

PRAGUE — A recent concert in Prague demonstrated the far-flung reach of an infectious musical genre that spells “Americana” from the first ringing twang of a finger-picked string.

An article about Jimmy Martin

E-mail Print PDF
I got this remarkable article via e-mail some time ago from our friend Hans Wolters. I think it is worth reading again:

Jimmy Martin was not the first great bluegrass lead singer. But; He is the Epitome of bluegrass singing, and has no peer. Martin was first heard with Bill Monroe on classics such as "Uncle Pen", "Walking To Jerusalem", and the incredible "On And On", available on Monroe's Country Music Hall Of Fame Series disc (MCA).
